As mentioned in a previous post my cousin today gave me a few old B/W photos of me as a little guy.  I never realized until now that I’m apparently older than color photography.  Depressing as that might be, here’s me in my birthday duds, age 3+/-Cake

After that, it was all downhill.

When “home” is no longer “home”

Isn’t it funny, or maybe just odd, that people will grow up in one place, then move off for a career, raise a family, etc, but always say when they retire they’ll move “back home”.  ‘Course, “home” after a lifetime away is no longer home.  Virtually every one you knew, or every place you were familiar with as a kid, is now gone.  That’s what I heard today over and over.  All the old-timers at the funeral for my late cousin said “My, how Kaufman has changed since I was here last.”  Duh!  That’s why they say “the only constant is change.”

It was a very nice service, and afterwards we all went back to my cousin’s home (the deceased’s son) for a meal and some reminiscing.  He gave me some old photos he’d found of me and my family from years ago.  I’ll post one later after K gets home and shows me how to scan.  (Told you I was a technological neanderthal.)

Kaufman reminds me of Mayberry from the old Andy Griffith Show.  I saw a cop car and almost expected to find Barney Fife behind the wheel keepin’ an eye on things.  Last night I had to ask directions to the cemetery and was given directions something like, “Go down a ways ’till you see the old McGuire homestead, then turn left and go a piece ’till you get to the square .  Then you go 3/4 of the way around the square and then go straight a couple ‘o blocks to the cemetery.  ‘Ya can’t miss it.”  The scary part is, following those directions, I found it.

I’ll be back later with an old  photo or two.  See ‘ya.

Bye-bye “sleeping in”…..

“The calm before the storm” appears to be nearing the end.  I can see “the storm” from here.  No, not the weather.  I’m talking about work.  The old adage is you sell your new homes in the first 6 months of the year, then you build them the second 6 months of the year.  We’re there.

Vacation last week spent with the lovely and talented K was nice, but today we’re both back at it.  I can hear her in there now, phoofing her new “do”, while the shower awaits me.  I have to go to a funeral this morning, then back to the details of closing our Lakewood house tomorrow.  We finally sold it, and I’m grateful for that, but we’re going to have to take a 6-figure check with us to close.  (That’s how much we’ll lose.)Cry

We should have the plans from the architect today for Dr. & Ms. M’s new house, so we’ll be getting bids for the next couple of weeks.  Then the dirt can fly.  Yea!!!  We’ll be hearing back soon, maybe today, from M/M R regarding their plans-in-progress, too.

As I’ve been sitting around for months watching CNBC and helping K by doing a load of washing now and then, the work is a welcome distraction. I’m sorry, but just checking and returning email is NOT work.  If I’m not somehow gettin’ dirty, it ain’t work.  Haha!

Monday, here I come, ready or not.  Y’all be good.  Party on…..
